Spreading Light in a Darkened World
Missionaries worked much in China, especially when China was being conquered by European countries. Here they tried to gain access to the royal court, in an effort to convert the leaders, while others worked to convert the common people. Here, many missionaries worked to astound the scholar gentry, therby retaining their presence among the elite.
Robert Morrison - 1st protestant missionary to China in 1807. He also translated the Bible into Chinese.
Hudson Taylor - Reached China in 1845, in the middle of the many rebellions and wars. He became Chinese, and adopted the Chinese way of life, causing great ridicule and persecution.
