The Raj

The word Raj means prince or royalty in Indian languages. It can also refer to the British Raj.

The British Raj was when the British had control over India from 1858 to 1947. The British Empire had taken over India, Pakistan, and other surrounding areas. The areas were not directly under the British Rule. The British had people like the Maharajas, Rajas, Thakurs, and Nawwads control the region under treaties with the Empire as the superior.

The British Raj started when Frederick North created a bill called The Regulating Act of 1773, which granted the British government rule over the work of the East India Company. The British stayed in India and expanded the company. They got rid of Indian rivals. The British came into India and took control of some areas getting rid of any other European influence that may have already been established there.

There was a rebellion in India that later led to the end of the Mughal Empire in India. The British got rid of the British East India Company.

With World War II, the Raj and British Rule in India ended. In July 1942, the Indian National Congress requested independence from Great Britain.
