Week 20-21: Muslim Empires and Asian Transitions IDs

-The harem originated in the Ottoman Empire

-The word comes from an Arabic word meaning forbiden, although now it is commonly asociated with polygamy

-It was also a word used to name women's quarters

-The Topkapi palace was a very large harem, and held at times over a thousand women. However, this place was more like the living quarters, as it was where the children were raised, and other daily things took place.

This is entitled "Shopping in the Harem" and shows the women being presented with jewels.
