Napoleon III . . . who's he?

(Napoleon III... Emporer of France, born 1808, died 1873)

So here's a little about Napoleon III... also known as Louis Napoleon Bonaparte III:

~ He was an Emporer in France

~ He was the last monarch to rule France

~ Due to his relations to the previous Napoleon Bonaparte... his family was exiled from France

~ He was raised in Switzerland, but as he got older, he moved to Italy with his older brother

~ In Italy, he and his brother became highly involved in Carbonari

Carboni was a resistence organization to Austrian Domination in Northern Italy

~ In October of 1836, Napoleon III secretly snuck back to France and made a failed attempt to get back in power, he was tried and sent to the US

~ He tried again in August of 1840... this time he was imprisoned

~ While imprisoned, he wrote essays and pamphlets claiming his right to the throne

~ In May 1846, he escaped to the United Kingdom

~ In 1848, France became a republic, and he was free to return, he soon did so

~ He ran for and won a seat in the group to draw up a new constitution for France as a Republic

~ He then ran later that year and won with 75% of the votes, presidency

~ On December 2, 1851(the 47th year aniversary of Napoleon I's crowning), he seized all dictator powers and overthrough parliament with a staged coup d'etat

~ Napoleon III now had a beaurocracy focused soley on him.

~ The next December 2, exactly one year after Napoleon's return as dictator, the government became an Empire once again, with Napoleon on top.

~ Napoleon ended up starting the Franco- Prussian War, which cost him everything

~ He died after spending the last few years of his life in exile... his last words were "were you at Sedan" (the place he lost it all)

Here's a little family tree:::

Louis Bonaparte (he was a prince)  and Napoleon Bonaparte I and Joseph Bonaparte(oldest) were brothers... Louis was youngest

                  l                                                                       l                                         l

Napoleon Louis and Louis Napoleon                      Napoleon II                          no children

Ok, so according to the law of succession that Napoleon I set into place,

The order of succession was supposed to go like this...but it didn't go exactly right:

                             1) Napoleon I

                                   2) Napoleon II... he was a sickly youth in trouble with the law

   3) Louis Bonaparte ... he was Napoleon I's brother

                                                4) Louis Napoleon Bonaparte... his brother was skipped because he hadn't found favor from Napoleon I

Because Joseph Bonaparte had no children, and Louis Napoleon's older brother Napoleon Louis died, as well as Napoleon I's son Napoleon II, there was no one left in the succession line except for Napoleon III (Louis Napoleon) and his father and uncle who were both too old and let Napoleon III take over.
