The King and Queen of France

 

Louis XVI

Born August 23, 1754.

His father, who would have taken the throne in front of him, died at age 35.

Oldest living son out of 8 children.

His older brother would have taken the throne in front of him, died at the age of 10.

His parents ignored him and focused on his older brother.

After the death of his father, his mother sank into a deep depression in which she never emerged from.

Married soon after the death of his mother to the 14 year old Maria Antonia Josefa Johanna von Habsburg-Lothringen.

When he took over the throne, France was in deep debt.

He wasn't prepared to take over the throne due to his grandfathers lack of consulatation to him.

He was very popular with the people in France, both socially and politically.

He wasn't against a revolution.

His wife was extremely unpopular.

Became extremely depressed after the death of his son, suddenly at age 7.

On June 21, 1791 attempted to flee quietly with his family.

After this was placed under house arrest.

Offically arrested on August 13.

Executed by the guillotine on January 21, 1793.

 

 

 

 

 

Marie Antoinette

 

Maria Antonia Josefa Johanna von Habsburg-Lothringen

Born November 2, 1755

Maria Antonia was the fifteenth child, and eleventh (and last) daughter, of Francis I and Empress Maria Theresa.

Legend claims that Maria Antonia and the composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart became acquainted as children.

Maria Antonia's sisters were quickly married off to the heads of European royal houses.

Maria Antonia was required to leave her Austrian attire, possessions, servants, and friends behind, eventually she was allowed to keep her dog.

Their marriage wasconducted within hours of Marie Antoinette's arrival at Versailles.

The marriage was not consummated and wouldn't be for a few years.

Maria didn't conceieve until 7 years into their marriage.

Their first child was born on December 19, 1778.

She was assisted in getting dressed every morning.

Maria was 19 when her husband assumed the role as King of France after the death of Louis XV.

Quoted for saying "If they cannot eat bread, let them eat cake."

For her 21st birthday, she spent 3 days gambling.

People criticized Maria for appointing her friends into positions of power usually held by others.

Maria had four children: Marie Theresie, Louis Joseph, Louis Charles, and Sophie Beatrix.

The youngest child died suddenly right before her first birthday.

Dauphin died suddenly at age 7, rumors began to surface that she posioned her own son.

March on Versailles on October 5, 1789 because there were rumors that the royals were hoarding all the grain.

Maria was imprisoned on July 3, 1793.

On October 16, 1793, a guard cut Maria' hair and bound her hands behind her back.

At 12:15 Maria was executed, and the crowds cheered when her head was shown.
