Civilization Mission

 

  The Civilization Mission was what drove French colonization efforts during the "long nineteenth century." The french like the other European countries felt that it was their duty to assimilate the "backwards" people of Africa. The mission was started by a french republican named Jules Ferry.

 

Manifest Destiny

 

American westward expansion is idealized in Emanuel Leutze's famous painting Westward the Course of Empire Takes its Way (1861). The title of the painting, from a 1726 poem by Bishop Berkeley, was a phrase often quoted in the era of Manifest Destiny, expressing a widely held belief that civilization had steadily moved westward throughout history. The Manifest Destiny was the American belief that we should own land streaching from the Atlantic to the Pacific Ocean. It played a big role in the purchase of Oregon, as well as obtaining land in the south. The painting above expresses the belief that America should expand west. It is by Emanuel Leutze.
