Kwame Nkrumah

 

  • He was born on September 21, 1909 as Francis Nwia Kofi Ngonloma.
  • While he was a teenager he became an untrained elemenary school teacher. In 1926 he went to Achimota College and earned his teacher's certificate in 1930. In 1935 he attended Lincoln University in Pennsylvania and graduated wth B.A. degrees in economics and socialogy in 1939. He earned a theology degree from Lincoln Theological Seminary in 1942. He got M.A. degrees in education and philosophy from the University of Pennsylvania in 1942 and 1943.
  • In 1945 he helped to organize the fifth Pan-African Congress. Later he became vice president of the West African Students Union and founded the West African national Secretariat.
  • In 1947 he was invited to serve as the Gerneral Secretary to the United Gold Coast Convention under Joseph B. Danquah and was arrested because he was supspected to be behind the protest of African ex-servicemen. He was later released and became the leader of the youth movement.
  • In 1949 he organized groups into a new political party called The Convention People's Party which helpd to bring the Constitutional Proposals of October 1949, but it was rejected. The rejection led to his call for "Positive Action" which included Civil Disobedience, Non-Cooperation, Boycotts, and Strikes. He was arrested because of this and sentenced to three years in prison.
  • Britain organized the first general election in 1951, and even though he was in jail, Nkrumag won the election and his party gained 34 out of 38 seats in the Legislative Assembly.  Because he was the leader of government he was released from prison on February 12, 1951. After the withdrawal of the the British governor, he was appointed to Prime Minister and won the elcetion in 1960 to become the first President of Ghana. 
  • In 1962 he was awarded the Lenin Peace Prize by the Soviet Union. 
  • In 1964, Ghanan was declared a one-pary state with Nkrumah as Life President. But in 1966, his government was overthrown in a CIA backed military coup.
  • On April 27, 1972 he died of skin cancer and was buried in Ghana in a tomb at he village of his birth.
