ROMANESQUE VS GOTHIC


 

 

Romanesque

 

Radiating chapels and apse: Separate compartments.

 

Vault: Mostly barrel-vaults, some groin-vaults.

 

Arch type: Rounded arches.

 

Main vault support: Thick walls, buttresses.

 

Clerestory: Small windows.

 

Elevation: Horizontal, modest height.

 

Exterior: Plain, little decoration, solid.

 

Sculptural decoration: Thin, elongated, abstract figures.

 

Mood: Dark, gloomy.

 

Example: St. Sernin, Toulouse, France.

 

 


 

Gothic

 

Radiating chapels and apse: Unified, unbroken space.

 

Vault: Groin-vaulted cathedrals.

 

Arch type: Pointed arches.

 

Main vault support: Exterior flying buttresses.

 

Clerestory: Large stained-glass windows.

 

Elevation: Vertical, soaring.

 

Exterior: Ornate, delicate, lots of sculpture.

 

Sculptural decoration: More realistic proportions and individualized features.

 

Mood: Tall, light-filled.
