Gandhi and the nonviolent resistance

  • Gandhi (1869-1948) was a political and spiritual leader in the Indian Independence Movement who led other indians, displeased with the colonial government, in the protest against the colonial leaders.
  • This protest was nonviolent, but quite aggressive, which made him appealing to all people of the nationalist movement.
  • Gandhi was a very intelligent individual (he had a western-education law degree) but he still held on to traditional Hindu beliefs all of which he used to his benefit.  His education allowed him to understand the British government which was holding his people captive while his beliefs allowed him to relate to the Indian people.
  • He lived very simply, making his own clothes, eating a light vegetarian diet, and occasionally fasting as a form of protest.
  • In the 1920's-30's Gandhi organized many peaceful strikes, boycotts, and mass demonstrations (these tactics came to be known as Satyagraha, or the force of truth) to get his point across.
  • Gandhi was shot and killed in 1948 on his way to a prayer meeting.
