  • Leader of the Sainte Domingue (Haiti) Rebellion - link to Haitian Rebellion

  • Led black slaves to drive Spanish out of French Carribbean
  • French appointed him governor in 1797
  • Established the first Black-led government in the Americas
  • 1807- L'Ouverture called constitutional assembly that abolished slavery
  • Proclaimed himself governor for life and had the power to pass laws
  • 1802- Napoleon arrested and deported him to France where he died in his jail cell
