-The first Europeans to arrive in Malay were the Portuguese in 1509
-From then on, Europe gradually began to take over
-Dutch ousted the Portuguese in the 17th century, but other European powers remained in the lucrative spice trade there
-Modern Singapore was founded in 1819 by Thomas Stamford Raffles, pictured below
-He established the port there to challenge Dutch dominance of the archipelago
-The port then flourished because its tax rates were much less than the Dutch competitors
