When Brazil lost dominance in the Sugar market, Explorers began looking for precious metals.

In 1695 gold strikes where made in the mountains. (minas gerais)

Great Gold Rush

People deserted coastal towns and plantation to head to the mountains for gold.

5,000 immigrants a year from Portugal.

By 1720, there were over 35,000 slaves in the mines

Then 1775, it was 150,000 slaves in mines.

Government wanted parts of this money too, so they imposed heavy taxes

It got up to 3 tons of gold found a year.

Lead to many new options for the colony and continuance in economic policies. They were able to import many goods and resell them to further away areas with the help of gold.
