Ashikaga shogunate

By: Jordan Chatham

The Ashikaga shogunate was a feudal military dictatorship. It was ruled by the shoguns of the Ashikaga family. A shogun is a military rank and title that is similiar to general or a high ranked military officer. The Ashikaga shogunate ruled from about 1336 to 1573. The founder of the Ashikaga shogunate, Ashikaga Takauji, sided with the emperor against the Kamakura shogunate (the previous shogunate) and because of this the Ashikaga shogunate had more authority than the Kamakura. The Ashikaga shogunate ended in 1573 when they were driven out of Kyoto but the Ashikaga family survived and is still present today.
