 Facts about Aids in Africa

-Between 1999 and 2000 more people died of AIDS in Africa than in all the wars on the continent.

 

-By the end of 2003, twelve million children in Sub-Saharan Africa were orphaned by AIDS.

-AIDS first started being studied and worried about in 1981 when the first case of it was found in men in the US.  Later sciencetists found that the disease has existed in other parts of the world for some time now.  Through blood samples, from Bantu men who died from the illness in the Belgian Congo in 1959. These men were the first official case of an HIV infection.

 

-1985FDA approved first enzyme linked immunosorbant assay (ELISA) test kit to screen for antibodies to HIV.

-1987On March 19, FDA approved AZT - the first drug approved for the treatment of AIDS.
