Ogedei
The second Great Khan of the Mongol Empire
By Maggie Walston of course
Ogedei was the third son of Chinggis Khan and succeeded his father as the second Great Khan of the Mongol Empire. He was elected supreme khan at the kuriltai held in 1229 according to his father's wishes. Ogedei was not the best military leader, but was a crafty diplomat and a skillful manipulator. He maintained the stable empire his father had created. During his reign, the Mongols completed their conquest on the Jurchen Jin Empire. Ogedei's conquests included almost all of Russia (with the exception of Novgorod), Hungary, and Poland. He also granted permission to conquer the remainder of Europe, but his death brought the conquest of Austria, Germany, Italy, France and Spain to an end. The Mongol expansion under Ogedei helped bring stability to the Mongol Empire and nations they had conquered, while re-establishing the Silk Road.
