Nationalism is defined as an ideology that says that a nation is the fundamental unit for human social life, and takes precedence over any other social and political principle.
Many leaders that wanted the revolutions to stop and wanted to gain support from the people began to use nationalism. In times before this, nationalism challenged the way things were for the cause of the new loyalties. Many liberals still supported nationalism causes.
An Italian leader, Count Camillo di Cavour, used nationalism, after gaining liberal support, to form an alliance with France so that he could attack the Austrian Empire to the north in 1858. This started a war that sparked a nationalist rebellion in other parts of Italy. This led to a decrease in the political power of the Catholic pope, who did not support nationalist ideas. This eventually led to a decrease in the church's power in Western Europe's politics.
