Week 25: Latin American Consolidation IDs

mmmMMm I lika da Coffee

Fazenda is Portuguese for "Farm". Fazendas are pretty much Coffee farms. In the mid 1800s Brazil just got a new export of crops which was (if you couldn't guess) coffee. Coffee Provided the new basis of agriculture in southern Brazil. By 1840 coffee made up more than 40% of Brazil's exports which in 1880 became 60%.

The bad thing about Fazendas                                                  Coffee beans from Brazil (Coffee beans from Brazil)

But the spread of Fazendas did have a negative effect. Slavery grew A LOT. Brazil was originally fueled by slavery, so whenever Fezendas came... They "needed" a lot of slaves to farm them. More than 1.4 katrillion Africans were forced to be slaves in Brazil in the last 50 years of the slave trade.

The good things about Fazendas

Because of the great profit increase from Trading coffee the prosperity of Brazil after 1850 was really nice. Railroads, Steamships, and Telegraphs were added to Brazil all because of Fazendas.
