Weeks 32-35: Modern history IDs

A New School of Philosophy

Who:

Existentialism

When:

It began in the 19th century and continues to this day.

Where:

Its origins can be traced to Eastern Europe and now it is everywhere.

What:

Existentialism is a school of philosophy that emphasizes how people are in control of the creation of meaning in their own life. Within the philosophy there are many different beliefs due to the nature of its basis. These ideas, though not a part of it, are quite common in the philosophy: existence precedes essence, reason should be used as a defense against angst, dread, boredom, alienation, the absurd, freedom, commitment, and nothingness.

Why:

Existentialism came about because of continuous philosophical purists. This was the way that Kierkegaard and Nietzsche felt and they independently recorded their ponderings. It was these scribbles of brilliance that connected with many more people and thus the movement was born.

How is it Important:

Existentialism is important not only because it has become a popular philosophy, but also because of its media influence today. Movies, TV shows, and books have been centered on the philosophy and the postmodern movement of today was even based off existential ideas.

This is Soren Kierkegaard. He is one of the founding fathers of existentialism.
