Week 31: Cold War IDs
Detente -- it's French..
Detente literally means relaxing or easing.
Detente is used when trying to decrease the threats made between two aggressive nations.
During the COLD WAR
When talking about detente, it is mostly used to describe the Cold War from the late 1960s to the beginnings of the 1980s.
During the cold war, Russia felt that the nuclear arms race was hurting Russia's economy. They wanted the threats and tension to cease. America's economy was also dwindling because of the Vietnam War.
The Soviets wanted a detente for trade with Western Europe.
The two leaders of the countries, Nixon and Brezhnev thought that the detente would help increase home support and make the two countries stay powerful.
Treaties helped to make the detente possible.
Such as...
-Nuclear Non-proliferation treaty
-Outer Space Treaty
